==Plot introduction==
The story is principally set in and near Paris between 1789 and 1792. Yannick "Yann" Margoza, an orphaned gypsy boy, who can throw his voice and predict the future, works in a small theatre with his guardians, Topolain, a magician who can move objects with his mind, and Têtu, a dwarf. The trio are invited to perform at the chateau of the Marquis de Villeduval for him and his guests. However during one trick involving catching a bullet fired from a gun, Topolain is murdered by an old enemy from Têtu's past, Count Kalliovski. Têtu and Yann realise that he tampered with the gun. While trying to escape from Kalliovski, Yann meets the Marquis' daughter, Sido and is instantly smitten by her. After escaping back to Paris with Sido's help, Têtu warns Yann he is in grave danger and insists he travel to London to stay with the Laxtons, Sido's aunt and uncle from her mother's side, to which he reluctantly agrees. While in London, Yann is unhappy and homesick however, he learns to improve his telekinetic abilities with the help of some fellow gypsies, and makes a friend in his new tutor, Mr Trippin.
During Yann's absence, the political situation in France worsens with the outbreak of the French Revolution. The Marquis' Lawyer visits him one day with a letter from Kalliovski informing him of his desire to marry Sido. The Marquis initially refuses as he does not want to lose possession of his property until he is threatened with a cryptic warning: Remember your wife. too afraid to refuse, upon hearing that Kalliovski had murdered two of his acquaintances after they failed to pay their debts to him, agrees to the marriage.
Sido is less than thrilled about this arrangement but has no choice. The chateau is soon destroyed by a mob which results in the Marquis going mad and further abusing his daughter.
Meanwhile in London, Yann, now 17 years old, receives news of Sido's betrothal to the Count, furthermore, Têtu is alive – having survived an attack by Kalliovski's henchman.
Yann returns to France to meet with Têtu who reveals the truth about Kalliovski: He is Yann's father and murdered his mother, Anis, after she rejected his affections. It is also revealed that he aided in the death of Sido's mother, Isabelle, and her uncle, Armand, after she refused to become his mistress. While Kalliovski attends a performance, Yann comes up with a plan to summon the ghost Anis, leading Kalliovksi to discover that he is Yann's father, much to both of their disgust. Yann and Sido are briefly reunited where he tries to persuade her to leave France with him and Têtu, but she refuses to leave her father behind. The Marquis' lawyer then reveals that Sido is not the daughter of the Marquis, but rather Isabelle and Armand who had attempted to flee to London with her when she was three years old, only to be thwarted by Kalliovski on the Marquis' behalf after he discovered their affair.
Sido and the Marquis are duped by Mr. Tull who was working for Kalliovski, who takes them to prison. While there, Kalliovski presses Sido about their betrothal and explains that even if she doesn't come willingly, he will still have her. Yann and Têtu plan to use the information about Sido's parentage to change Sido's mind. Yann breaks into Kalliovski's chateau, using his telekinetic abilities to steal the love letters from Isabelle and Armand but much to his horror, discovers automatons created from the count's murdered victims who show him where they show him where to find the letters.
Sido is taken to be tried but is luckily declared innocent, right at the last minute, hence sparing her from the fate of her fellow prisoners, only to be kidnapped by Kalliovski, abandoning the Marquis to his fate. Yann manages to rescue Sido from Kalliovksi and the mob. The couple share a moment before parting. Sido goes to London to be with her family, the Laxtons, while Yann stays behind with Têtu to help aristocrats escape from France.
